Do Better SEO Research with these SEO Tools

When you search a domain on SpyFu.com, we offer SEO-specific research tracks in addition to a general overview. It’s easy to jump between tabs throughout the site, so don’t worry about locking yourself into one track. The SEO Track’s purpose is to keep you focused on the most relevant findings when you search a domain.

If you take the SEO track, here’s a look at what you’ll find:

SEO Overview

The SEO Overview lets you quickly gauge the overall SEO performance of any competitor. Here, you’ll find summaries as well as links to in-depth data described below.

Key Metrics for a Domain

At first glance you’ll see top metrics that load into the main chart (including a new one):

Organic Keywords: You can see how many keywords they rank for (in the top 50 results) and how that count has fluctuated over time.

Sum of Rank Change: A new metric to SpyFu, it tallies up the rank gains you’ve made across your keywords.

Estimated Monthly Clicks/Monthly Value: Both of these carry over from the past SpyFu version but with some user improvements:

  • There are now Google algorithm update markers. When a site drops its total click count, you can compare that to any recent Panda or Penguin roll-outs.
  • Adjust the time frame. These time windows are no longer static, so you can pick up a better sense of growth and recurring patterns when you compare 6 months to 5 years.

Page 1 Keywords

Look at your keywords with your action-goggles on. Optimization brings change and improvement, and it’s time you get a better snapshot of those results. Because of the work you did, some keywords just made it to page one, and some are almost there.

That lets you measure achievements but then focus on the most pressing opportunities. That’s why we include the “just fell off” segment, too. It gives you a sense of how many keywords are moving in a certain direction.

On that note, we break apart keywords by which direction they changed ranks, too. That takes us to…

Gainers and Losers

Keyword gainers and losers

Here’s a snapshot of your rankings’ overall shift from the last month. Rankings fall. It happens, but when you see it happen in the shadow of larger gains across a niche and alongside newly ranked keywords, you can better understand bigger picture.

These two sections (Page One Keywords, Gainers & Losers) can stand alone as comparison charts, or you can dig deeper by clicking through. There, we can build a customized domain SEO report that analyzes the specific keywords causing these jumps and drops. (There’s also a list of specific keywords when you scroll down. More on that in a bit…)

In fact, nearly all of these snippets serve a dual purpose. This SEO overview page exists to let you assess a domain fast, but it also shows you the full toolset that’s available. Click through to “view more,” and we’ll connect you with expanded data, more details and stats, or links to specialty reports that carefully analyze a domain compared to its competitors.

You can also click any of those tabs directly from the SEO Research page. That is another route to open the full, expanded feature like Backlinks or Ranking History.

Find its (organic) competitors and how they compared over time

Competitors seo clicks overtime in SpyFu

That’s the key to this new innovation. Most tools can tell you a site’s biggest competitors, but the history helps you make sense of them. It shows you which competitors have been the bigger threat or new on the scene. Changing the chart’s keyword count over time to “monthly clicks” and “monthly value” makes this a good indicator of who is ranking for the most effective keywords. Plus, you can add any domain to compare against the auto-selected biggest rivals.
